The room’s claim
Biblical teaching supplied language for dignity, service, literacy, reform, and resistance. Christian institutions helped create durable forms of education and medicine. Yet colonial power, nationalism, paternalism, class, patriarchy, and institutional self-preservation also shaped the encounter.
Before proceeding: The museum will not claim that every modern reform came from the Bible, or that churches consistently obeyed what they preached. Impact must be traced claim by claim, alongside Korean reformers and other religious or civic movements.
Korean-script Bibles, tracts, newspapers, hymnals, and classrooms joined a larger print transformation. Reading Scripture could nurture literacy and shared vocabulary, but the Bible did not act alone; reformers, publishers, schools, markets, and state policy also mattered.
Christian missions founded schools and medical institutions while official evangelism remained restricted. These places introduced knowledge and care, trained Korean professionals, and created openings for women. They were also missionary strategies, shaped by unequal resources and foreign authority.

Bible women, teachers, nurses, students, evangelists, and organizers entered public life through new institutions and their own initiative. Some named women survive in the record; many more remain unnamed. New opportunity did not eliminate church patriarchy or restore every right earlier lost.

Christians participated in independence, education, relief, and democratic movements; Christians also compromised with empire, authoritarian rule, wealth, and exclusion. The same Bible could be invoked to resist domination or to defend hierarchy.

When change becomes visible in relationship
Biblical impact cannot be measured only by counting schools and hospitals. Look at who could enter a room, who remained beside another person, and who could learn, return, and serve.
An unnamed Korean Bible woman
Twenty-one Korean women gathered in Mary F. Scranton’s house, and two were appointed as Bible women. A male missionary could not enter the inner rooms where many women lived, but a Korean woman could. One later reported visiting house to house and meeting one hundred people. Asked why she loved Jesus, she answered that Jesus had forgiven her sins. The report preserved her sentence but not her name.
A restriction determined who could cross the threshold. Kim Jeom-dong (김점동), known as Esther Park (박에스더)
Kim Jeom-dong entered Ewha at ten. While interpreting for a woman doctor, she learned medicine through the work of making one person’s words understandable to another. She later studied at Baltimore Woman’s Medical College. Her husband Park Yu-san (박유산) worked so she could continue, then died three weeks before her final examinations. She passed, declined an American practice, returned to Korea, and treated 2,414 patients in her first ten months.
Her life was neither an institution’s gift nor an isolated individual victory. It was formed through translation, education, marriage, sacrifice, grief, professional discipline, and her own decision to return and serve.Lee Bang-won — The Life and Medical Missionary Work of Esther Park 한국어 ↗
Pak Song-chun (박성춘), 1862–1933
Pak Song-chun, born into the butcher caste, began attending the Gondangol Christian gathering after recovering from severe illness. Yangban participants said they could not worship beside a butcher and demanded that he be sent elsewhere. When Samuel F. Moore refused, they separated themselves instead. Pak traveled among butcher communities, petitioned the government to confirm the end of discriminatory restrictions, and later spoke as a citizen representative at the 1898 Joint People’s Assembly.
